In the video, learners are completely freestyling
(improvising) because they had seen me model this for them. Many young learners attempt this improve regardless of their musical talent or ability because they thrive on the interaction that this musical language form brings forth. However, this is
not expected in most cases, and just a free flow poem or even spoken word or
talking is perfectly acceptable given the right comfort in cultural space and
learning environment.
Learners complement each other using rhymes, taking 30
seconds for each round, and having their peers offer who “won” the compliment
battle, and justifying why.
A young learner and friends were involved in language play, while at the end of the video, another learner made an attempt at a compliment in Spanish, however it was taken as an inappropriate comment by her, which was briefly settled through intercultural communication within the video, and in a circle outside of this footage, they all came together as learners who get involved in the writing of the lyrics to build language in the following jam session.
